The Tamale Lady finds a home

The Tamale Lady, aka Virginia Ramos, finally has a restaurant to call her own (for real this time).

Mission Local reported today that Supervisor David Campos has secured a storefront for the Mission's favorite bar-hopping foor purveyor, a location at 16th and Mission.

Sup. Campos' aide Nate Albee confrimed the move with Mission Local:

“It will be her very own place,” Albee says. “We pulled out all the stops, and it took six months, but we found a place.”

Campos told us about the 16th and Mission location in a text message last week, which Albee says was going to be a secret until they signed the lease and had a press conference likely in January. “He was not supposed to tell anyone that,” Albee sighed. “Oh, David.”

Campos confirmed with the Guardian that Ramos will have her own storefront, saying "You can imagine she was real excited. It has been a life long dream for her to have her own space."

The Tamale Lady has served up the goods for Missionites for years, but in June was barred from the ever-popular bar Zeitgeist after the Department of Public Health starting cracking down on street vendors, which the Guardian's Marke B. covered. We're just happy she'll have a new home. They have not yet signed the lease, but are anticipating everything to be finalized in January.

break the city's health codes then you will be rewarded by a facilitation of a restaurant space.

Follow all the rules and you'll get no help at all.

Still, as long as it's a WOC, then of course we should throw largesse at her.

indeed, we need to throw big largesse for so many women of color in the city....they work their butts off to only to get banned from surviving....the rules, by the way, only favor rich business (in case you have missed the point).

as if they are nothing more than some precious stereotype.

That will add a buck to the cost of each tamale.

Then there's the rent, license fees, liability insurance - none of which she has to bother with now.

Interesting that the left are cheering on a woman who ignored all regulations. The left usually hates that, except when it is one of their own of course.

The tamale lady is a successful entrepreneur. Not only that, but she has an innovative business model. You capitalist trolls should be all for that. And yet when it's a woman of color that's succeeding, you're quick to hurl vitriol at her. Bizarre.

They're just jealous.

Posted by marcos on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 6:17 pm

we're jealous of some Hispanic broad who breaks the law and puts peoples' health at risk?

Why would I be envious of "tech workers?"

than you are AND much younger than you are.

And wronger.

You're not, from what I know of you from what you've written on this site, and neither am I. The Envy Card is part of that "Politics of Envy and the Politics of Greed" (old class warfare language) that's played regularly on this site by a couple of the techie trolls. It's a diversion tactic. They throw out the Envy Card so they don't have to talk about their Politics of Greed at any costs ("the ends justify the means") while they shill for the techies. Always best to ignore trolls so they don't get the attention they demand.

They are pointing out that the government that you worship torments people like her unless she ignores all of these invasive laws.

Again you want it every way to your advantage.

I'm on a first name basis with her and was happy to buy her tamales while she was a law breaker, happy to help out a person who isn't interested in your authoritarianism and wants to do their own thing.

What you lost in this entire episode is your love of authoritarian government sticking it to her. How you turn this all around to your advantage here is a example of your weird relationship with authority. You claim to hate it but embrace it like all progressives unless it somehow effects you.

I was happy with her doing her thing, the state was not, you complain that the state has to much power but as a progressive want to increase the states power.

pass the bong

It doesn't wear well on you, Matlock.

Posted by Greg on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 6:34 pm

I've never made the envy argument.

I've laughed with it, but never actually put it forth.

Posted by Matlock on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 7:03 pm

there is a profit to be made. I'll remember that.

Or do white male entrepreneurs not get the same deal?

like this is a win-win for everyone. Kudos to Campos for finding an innovative solution.

Just wish Ed Lee could have been as innovative in finding a way for Twitter to stay in the city, while still paying their fair share of taxes, like the Tamale Lady.

Posted by Greg on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 7:06 pm

How the heck would you know, Greg?

Twitter pays a lot of tax.

Posted by Guest on Jan. 06, 2014 @ 7:02 pm

I'm sure she pays a higher percentage than Twitter.

Posted by Greg on Jan. 06, 2014 @ 7:27 pm

Thanks again, Greg, for substituting what you want to believe for the truth.

If she starts making real money you will hate her too Greg…. Then she will buy a TIC...

It is a wonder that the Tamale Lady does not simply decamp to Reno just to avoid Taxifornia's oppressive tax regime.

Posted by marcos on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 6:20 pm

She's off the grid, remember?

Posted by Guest on Dec. 30, 2013 @ 6:31 pm

The story says she's going brick and mortar which means gridding herself to the dreaded yoke of the collectivist taxman. it is a wonder that she does not do herself a favor and flee to Nevada to avoid the business killing taxes here in Taxifornia.

David Campos hold an event near 16th and Mission and invite the press? Why, he's done so much to make the BART plazas accommodating to everyone, free from smelling like a sewer, assisted the homeless and strung out folks who need social services and hang out there. That's why his campaign kickoff for assembly was held at 24th and Mission BART plaza.

Glad the Tamale Lady has a lease in the pipeline but I take pity on those who depend on Campos for action, quick or otherwise. Just look at how long it's taking him to get the homeless queer shelter on South Van Ness opened.
