Tim, right on. I would love to see those things gone for good in SF. They are incredibly loud (massive understatement) - must raise the bp of everyone within 5 miles of them by 40 pts.

And they are nothing but a big fat ad for war and its toys. And if one of those things lost control over a neighborhood in SF (like in the Marina or Marina Greens, it could kill up to a hundred people). The City of SF is really rolling the dice playing that game every year with those death machines. Those who don't think a crash can happen should read the book, The Black Swan (Nassim Taleb or something like that is the author).

I understand that bicycles are supposed to be good for the environment but when they crash into pedestrians, it really sucks. Don't you think?

Yes,,,I agree we have a bloated military,,,but still,,,we'll always need people that know how to blow crap up and fuck with folk that would fuck with us. If someone willingly and knowingly takes up the military for a vocation,,,more power to them. I can't stand the (insert something other people like that you don't) Every year I have to deal with the (insert inconvinience that happens once a year in your life). I (insert "attempt" at ignoring the thing other people are interested to make yourself seem like you are trying to accomodate them). I find it obscene that huge amounts of money and resources are being wasted (on whatever the thing is you don't like but others do) while (insert concern which you feel more passionate about). How does one justify such a waste of money on (activity you don't like but millions of other people (not just those who attend) do) when (restate concern which interests you more).

Other people have hobbies and interests which may require me to modify my plans (Game Day traffic can be a bother) or be annoyed for a small fraction of a year, but that doesn't mean that they should be banned from their enjoyment, and it doesn't mean that I have to make a big deal of it. And when it comes to my hobbies and interests, I expect the same courtesy.

As for the money, cutting the funding of a few F-18s and their pilots won't suddenly free up a load of money to magically give everyone a place to live. The military budget is what it is... and if the Blue Angels go away, they'll just use the money for someting else, maybe some bombs or another jet with a less pretty paint job. Honestly, I like seeing them spend some money to show young people that hard work and precision can be amazing, or to inspire them to stay in school and become a pilot or aeronautical engineer, either military or civilian.

Okay, I'm done picking on you in particular.

As for the rest of the "Oh God, we're all in danger" crowd:
Planes are not the big scary "about to fall out of the sky at any moment" death machines that so many people are afraid of. Teenage girls texting while driving should be higher on the list of things which want to kill you today. That's coming from someone who lives right under the final approach path into the local airport. When a jet comes over, we just stop talking for a few seconds, look up and enjoy the sight of an engineering marvel, and resume the conversation when it passes. Nobody is SO important that they can't just shut up for a cumulitave day or two a year.

Do planes crash? Yep. Do cars crash? hell YES! Do people's houses burn down because of electrical fires? Sure do. Should cars be outlawed since I don't need one, and there is a possibility of one going "out of control" and coming through my living room? No. Should we ban the use of electricity in our homes because we have the slim chance of being harmed by it? I think you get the point.

You might die today. You can accept that or build a bunker, grab some Doritos, and isolate yourself from anything which has ANY chance of possibly harming you. And if airplanes make you so scared that you are living in "terror" every day, this is the wrong country for you. Powered flight was born here. Aviation serves ALL of us (not just in a military sense), regardless of whether or not you want to recognize it.
